About the Proponent

California billionaire Tom Steyer’s political arm is the sole donor to the Question 6 campaign

Steyer’s group spent over $2 million to put Question 6 on the Nevada ballot.

Tom Steyer is a hedge fund billionaire, founder of San Francisco-based Farrallon Capital. He is reported to have a net worth of $1.6 billion.

Steyer has committed to spending as much as $30 million this election cycle on get out the vote drives.

Steyer earned his wealth through Farrallon’s global fossil fuel investments. Farrallon’s portfolio has included coal mines and coal plants across Asia and Australia and an oil pipeline builder (this company was building a rival project to the Keystone XL pipeline, which Steyer actively campaigned against)

Because of the job-killing effects of the policies advocated by Steyer, in 2015, eight AFL-CIO-affiliated construction unions signed a letter to the union’s leadership urging any partnership with him be cancelled.

Steyer has been implicated in “dark money” scandals around the country, including a scandal that led to the 2015 resignation of Oregon’s governor.

In Washington State, Steyer spent an unprecedented amount of money to influence a city council election. His funds changed the election’s outcome, blocking a union-backed pro-jobs plan to build a new port. The plan would have created 1250 permanent jobs and 4500 union construction jobs.

Mike Elliott, a spokesman and lobbyist for the Washington State Legislative Board of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen, stated:

“But opponents brought in this billionaire environmentalist from California, and not just him — they’ve come up with a whole lot of money. They’ve got more resources than we will ever have, and it makes all the difference in the world. You shouldn’t be able to come in with a wheelbarrow full of money and influence the electoral process. I just think that’s wrong.”
